Colorado author Joyce B. Lohse combines journalism, history, and genealogy to write all-ages biographies for Filter Press.
Joyce has received three CIPA EVVY awards, a silver WILLA award, and a Colorado Authors’ League award for Best YA Nonfiction Book. In March 2008, she accepted induction in the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame for her historical subject, Eliza Routt.
Joyce is administrator for Women Writing the West, writes magazine articles, and has spoken to more than one hundred groups during the past decade. Research has led her to visit cemeteries, archives, and repositories throughout Colorado and the West.

Spencer Penrose came to Colorado in 1892 to partner with his boyhood friend, Charles L. Tutt, and he became wealthy from real estate and mining investments.
The Penrose legacy in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region includes The Broadmoor resort, the Pikes Peak Highway and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. In 1937 Penrose and his wife Julie established another lasting legacy, El Pomar Foundation, which supported cultural and civic institutions including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Central City Opera, Fountain Valley School, and continues to enrich the Colorado Springs cultural and civic life today.
