The Duke of the Chutes

The Duke of the Chutes

Harry Vold's Sixty Years in Rodeo

By

Loren R. Whittemore

Harry Vold staged his first rodeo in 1944 when he and his brothers put on the "Asker Stampede" in a small town near their father's ranch in Alberta, Canada. Auctioning and trading horses helped the family get through the Depression and set Harry on a path to become stock contractor for major rodeos throughout the United States and Canada. The Harry Vold Rodeo Company in Avondale, Colorado, is the premier producer of rodeos including Cheyenne Frontier Days and the National Finals Rodeo. Harry has been named Stock Contractor of the Year eleven times by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

In The Duke of the Chutes, Loren Whittemore profiles a man central to the sport of rodeo for well over half a century. Harry Vold's story is rodeo's story.

Sources for The Duke of the Chutes

Author Loren R. Whittemore's account of the life and career of legendary rodeo stock contractor Harry Vold is based on extensive interviews during 2008 and 2009 with Harry and Karen Vold and with family, friends and professional associates.

Most of the material in The Duke of the Chutes is from those first hand accounts. Highlights of Harry Vold's life have also been chronicled in newspapers and magazines over many years. Many of those sources—some no longer in publication—were found as fragments in family scrapbooks, and served not so much to verify Harry's recollections, but as spring boards for capturing background and deeper insights from the man himself.

The following is a list of sources used.
