[About the Great Lives biography series.]

Born in the small mining town of Rosita, Colorado, in 1887, Ralph Carr grew up in the Cripple Creek mining camp and earned a scholarship to the University of Colorado. After college, he practiced law in the San Luis Valley town of Antonito.

In 1938, Ralph Carr was elected governor of Colorado. Unpopular at the time, he is admired today for his courage in opposing the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
