Ouray was leader of the Tabaguache band of the Ute Indians who inhabited what is now Colorado and New Mexico.

Chief Ouray led his people through the difficult but generally peaceful transition from traditional ways to a culture dominated by white settlers and United States western expansion. He negotiated a series of treaties with the U.S.. Ouray was a powerful leader, yet could see both sides of problems.
