Zebulon Pike, the son of a Revolutionary War major, joined the army when he was 15 years old.

After the Louisiana Purchase, Pike was sent to explore the Mississippi River in 1805. The Pike Expedition continued west from Missouri and Kansas into present day Colorado and New Mexico. He built a small fort, the first American building in Colorado near Pueblo. From the fort, Zebulon and his men saw the snow-capped mountain peak that now bears his name.

Pike died in battle during the War of 1812 at the age of 34.
