In 1907, Frank Craig established the "Brotherly Relief Colony" west of Denver to treat indigent men with tuberculosis. The tent colony grew under Frank's leadership and through the support of others, especially Mrs. J. A. Cooper, the widow of a former governor of Colorado. The treatment facility was renamed Craig Colony in 1919 in memory of Frank, who died of tuberculosis in 1914 at age 37.

After tuberculosis declined, the treatment focus shifted over the years to spinal cord injury and brain injury rehabilitation. Craig Hospital today is one of the the foremost rehabilitation hospitals in the United States.

Herb Tabak, a former patient at Craig Hospital, is the author of No Whining (an account of his rehabilitation at Craig) and Craig Hospital: A Century of Rebuilding Lives.
