[About the Great Lives biography series]

Frances Wisebart Jacobs, 1843 1892, could not turn away from the desperately poor and ill consumptives in the streets of Denver. She helped start a free hospital that was initially named the Frances Jacobs Hospital. Today, we know it as National Jewish Hospital. She was also instrumental in creating a community charity that became the United Way.
