Fannie Mae Duncan came to Colorado Springs from Oklahoma as a teenager in 1933. Everyone in her family worked to create a new life in Colorado, but Fannie Mae’s gift for business was soon evident. Her most successful business was a nightclub that catered to all races, prominently displaying its policy of “Everybody Welcome.” The club was very popular and played a role in de-segregating Colorado Springs. Her story is an ‘up by the boot straps’ tale of entrepreneurism.
