[About the Great Lives biography series.]

Hazel Schmoll learned to love plants as a child growing up in Ward, Colorado. She earned a PhD in botany in 1932 and served Colorado as the state botanist identifying more than 10,000 plants during her tenure. Hazel is largely responsible for preserving the Colorado Columbine, the state flower, by advocating for a law making it illegal to destroy or pick columbines growing wild in the state.
