[About the Great Lives biography series.]

In 1925, Rattlesnake Kate Slaughterback killed 140 rattlesnakes in one afternoon near Hudson, Colorado. She had no choice. If she had been unable to fight off the snakes, they surely would have spooked her horse and her small son would have been thrown from the saddle and bitten. She emerged a heroine from that afternoon. Newspapers wrote about her feat, and she enjoyed the fame. Kate also turned the event into a business. She sold items made from the snakeskins! Kate Slaughterback is a wonderful example of the intrepid homesteaders of the Colorado plains.
