Joyce B. Lohse

Spencer Penrose came to Colorado in 1892 to partner with his boyhood friend, Charles L. Tutt, and he became wealthy from real estate and mining investments.

Penrose was indeed a builder and a benefactor to Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region. His legacy includes The BROADMOOR, a world-class resort in the foothills the Rockies, as well as the Pikes Peak Highway and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

In 1937 Penrose and his wife Julie established another lasting legacy, El Pomar Foundation, which supported cultural and civic institutions including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Central City Opera, Fountain Valley School, and continues to enrich the Colorado Springs cultural and civic life today.

Joyce B. Lohse is the author of Baby Doe Tabor: Matchless Silver Queen and First Governor, First Lady: John and Eliza Routt of Colorado. She is also the author of four biographies in the Now You Know Bio series (Emily Griffith, Justina Ford, Molly Brown, and General William Palmer).
