Edward Lehman with Suzanne Barrett

Ed Lehman, newspaper owner/publisher, investigative reporter, Deputy District Attorney (Denver), private practice trial attorney, Colorado legislator, and civic leader, long intended to write his remarkable life story. Finally, after retiring at age 85, he began working with former newspaper associate Suzanne Barrett to reflect on and record his life with the much of the twentieth and some of the twenty-first centuries as a backdrop.

In Rolling with the Press: A Publisher’s Journey Lehman notes that the one constant in this world is change. The changes he has seen in his life, technologically, socially, and politically, are astounding. As a child, he visited with Civil War veterans and looked forward to rides home from school in a Model A Ford. As an adult, he published newspapers that reported on man’s ventures into space, desegregation, the women’s movement, and terrorist threats.

He knew, and was known by, the leaders of the growing city of Denver during years of reporting for the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post, and as a deputy district attorney. His true calling was farther north and in a new role. In 1957, he and his wife, Ruth, moved to Longmont to publish the Longmont Times-Call. That led to the acquisition of four other newspapers and a leading role in national journalism circles.

Ed Lehman not only guided his newspapers by the motto “To Build a Better World, Start in Your own Community,” he encouraged the members of the communities the newspapers served to do the same. His vision was to inform Americans so they could be fully engaged citizens.
