Dr. Washington Matthews

This book contains two articles that appeared originally in Reports of the Bureau of Ethnology: Navajo Silversmiths in the Second Report of the Bureau of Ethnology for 1880-1881 and Navajo Weavers in the Third Report of the Bureau of Ethnology for 1881-1882

The Bureau of Ethnology was established by Congress at the Smithsonian Institution in 1879. Under the leadership of founding director John Wesley Powell, the Bureau carried out extensive field research projects and produced numerous publications (most notably its Annual Reports and Bulletins).

Born in Ireland in 1843 with an M.D. from the University of Iowa in 1864, Washington Matthews was a surgeon in the United States Army stationed at Fort Wingate in New Mexico at the time of these articles. His studies of the Navajo helped to revise then-current, but erroneous, thinking about the complexity of Navajo culture.

All illustrations from the original articles are reproduced in the book. In addition, sketches by another physician, Dr. William H. Holmes, are included to show Navajo hogans as they were constructed at the time.

First published by Filter Press in 1968, the book has been in our catalog for more than forty years.
