By Gail Haley
An ancient Native American tale beautifully told and illustrated by Caldecott Medalist Gail E. Haley.
32-pages, full color, dust jacket. Ages 8 and up.

From Booklist Review:
Gr. 3-5. This handsome picture book for middle readers relates the story of legendary Native American deity Kokopelli the Cicada. Mesmerized by Kokopelli's haunting flute music and calmed by the thumping of the drum in his belly, the naive Ant People follow Kokopelli out of the Dark World through four layers of other worlds until they reach the Green World, where sunlight "shriveled their underground skins" and they become the First People. Along the way, they learn about growing food, getting along with others, and respecting elders, which enables them to survive and flourish in their new environment. Bold and colorful acrylic paintings on textured paper, filled with images central to Native American culture, create a rich visual backdrop against which this compelling story unfolds. An extensive author's note provides more information on this mythical figure and explains some of the more difficult symbols and concepts from the story.
