Emerita Romero-Anderson

Jose Dario Gallegos was born near Taos in 1830, the son of a merchant. He moved north into Colorado, leading the establishment in 1851 of the settlement of San Luis de Culebra—Colorado's oldest continuous settlement. Gallegos' life mirrors the spirit that spawned the early settlers.

Don Dario established the first store in the San Luis Valley, which has been in continuous operation since 1857.

Children's author and teacher, Emerita Romero-Anderson—a direct descendant of Don Dario—pays tribute to a man whose contributions have been overlooked for too long.
