Jose Dario Gallegos was born near Taos in 1830, the son of a merchant. He moved north into Colorado, leading the establishment of settlement of San Luis de Culebra in 1851. The town of San Luis is Clorado's oldest.
Dario established the first store in the San Luis Valley, which has been in continuous operation since 1857.
