The Glorious Quest of Chief Washakie

Ralph H. and Mary Tillman.

Washakie was Chief of the Eastern Shoshoni Tribe of Wyoming for more than sixty years. Believed to have been born in 1798 and living until 1900, he witnessed the arrival of Lewis and Clark as a young man and hosted a visit by President Chester A. Arthur as an old Chief. Washakie was famous for his skill and bravery in battle but also for his friendship with the early white pioneers.

Washakie became leader of the tribe at a time when the Shoshone way of life was being threatened by westward expansion of white Americans. Washakie's peaceful relations with Whites helped the Eastern Shoshone avoid the devastating effect of removal to Indian Territory, located in what is today Oklahoma. Washakie's alliance with the Americans also helped protect the Tribe from casualties at the hands of the U.S. Army. Washakie's choice of accomodation rather than war benefited his people.

Washakie befriended the Episcopalian missionary John Roberts and, in 1897, converted to Christianity. He died three years later at Flathead Village in Montana's Bitterroot Valley and was buried with full military honors at Fort Washakie, Wyoming.

Ralph H. Tillman was a great-great-grandson of Chief Washakie, born on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming in 1917. Educated in Indian schools in Wyoming and South Dakota, he enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and on Okanawa. He returned to the Wind River Reservation after his discharge in 1945. A talented artist, Ralph studied oil and water color painting at both the Indian Art School and Fine Arts School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Several of his paintings and drawings appear as illustrations in the book

To honor Chief Washakie and the Shoshone Tribe, Ralph and his wife Mary compiled this story of the great Chief from historical sources and from information given by the Shoshone people themselves.
